Our Father's Voice
Little Lamb was in the dream world. He was with all the animals of the forest. The warm evening breezes touched them gently as they sat and listened to Little Lamb speak.
Then Owl spoke up, “Yes, Little Lamb, how can I be a brother to Miss Deer? I sleep all day and am awake all night, and she sleeps all night and is awake all day.”
Bear spoke loudly in his deep voice, “Look at how big I am and how small Mouse is. How could we be brothers?” Little Lamb smiled lovingly at his friends and said to Miss Rabbit, “What do your mother and father look like?”
And Miss Rabbit said, “Why they have long ears, a fuzzy body and
strong legs just like me.”
“Tell me Owl,” asked Little Lamb, “What are your parents like?”
And Owl thought for a moment and said, “You know, they sleep all day and are awake all night, just like me.”
Then Little Lamb turned to Bear and said, “Your father must be big, just like you.”
And Bear nodded his head to answer “Yes.”
“You are all your parents’ children. You look like them and you act like them. Now tell me who is the Father of everyone and everything?”
And all the animals smiled and said together, “God is the Father of everyone and everything.”
“Now tell me what God our Father is like.”
Bear said loudly, “He is all powerful.”
Owl said thoughtfully, “He is very wise and knows everything.”
Miss Rabbit blushed and quietly said, “He is our Father and loves us.”
Little Lamb asked his friends, “Can you see God our Father?”
And Miss Deer looked up and said, “God is in our hearts. He isn’t something you see, God is love and that is something you can only feel.”
Now Little Lamb looked at all his friends and said, “God our Father is powerful, and wise and loving. And He is always in our hearts ready to help us. Now think for a moment. You are your parents’ children and as your parents are, so are you also. If God is in all of your hearts, then you must be in all of your brothers’ and sisters’ hearts also. If God is always ready to help us and love us, then we are always ready to help and love each other. For God is our Father and we are like Him.”
Owl’s eyes lit up and he said, “Now I understand. Our bodies are just costumes we put on for fun. They help us do our jobs. But it is what’s inside that is real. That is where God is. And where God our Father is, so our brothers and sisters are also. They are in our hearts always.” Little Lamb smiled and all the animals smiled at each other. In their hearts they could hear their Father’s Voice saying, “‘You are all My children: powerful, wise and always loving for I have made you so.”
And as the soft moonlight shone on all of them, they knew Who their Father was.
They could feel in their hearts that they were truly brothers and sisters.
They were one.
