Snapshots 2 - Armchair Safaris into the Early Church

Photo Journalists, Prepare!

Gather around the photo studio once again. Pull your chairs close while we create a clear intention for our second photo album. We are going back into the first century to follow the birth of the Early Church, and this gets a bit tricky. Just how do we approach this awesome and awe inspiring project? The first “Snapshots” book was a slam dunk to structure – follow the life of Jesus chronologically. Duh! But the early church offers too condensed and rich a target area.

Well, let’s take some pointers from those heroes of journalism that have gone before. We ask the following questions and answer them with the best answers we can discover:

Who, what, where, when, why, and how ? – the questions a good journalist tries to answer.  So let’s start our new album with the first section titled, WHO? We’ll fill in the blanks and then follow on to WHAT and beyond.

O.K. that seems simple enough, but what will be our intention? In the first volume my personal intention was to look at what history now offers about Jesus. Collect just the facts m’am, just the facts. To the best of my ability I tried to keep my own faith, my previous studies and convictions tucked in the desk. I wanted to follow the trail of history to wherever it led – with willingness to be wrong, disappointed, as well as amazed.

True, I let a little personal emotionalism slip into my writings, but I’m O.K. with it. And this time I think I will give myself just a little more freedom to draw some broader conclusions and include some really cool correlations and comparisons from wherever it seems helpful. And yes, even share a few personal moments.

So, it’s time to do some major research, gather up our gear, head back into the fray. . .

. . . and let the story continue!
