Little Lamb closed his eyes and quickly fell asleep. He must enter the dream again for there was more work for him to do.
“You always find the biggest nuts and never let me have any,” screeched Little Chipmunk.
“That’s right,” yelled back the other. “Whenever I find any nuts you steal them away for yourself.” And back to fighting they went. Bits of fur and grass flying into the air.
Little Lamb walked into the clearing.
“My brothers, what could be making you so angry?”
Big Chipmunk stopped nipping Little Chipmunk and said, “Every day I get up very early and work hard gathering nuts to eat. And every night when I am fast asleep he comes and steals them. This is not fair.”
Little Chipmunk looked up at Little Lamb, tears of hurt and anger in his eyes. “Big Chipmunk never shares his nuts with me. Every day we go out to search for nuts to eat. And every day he finds the biggest and the most. I am much smaller than he is. I cannot run as fast so I cannot find them first. I am not as strong so I cannot carry as many as he can. I am always hungry and never have enough to eat. While he always has more than enough to eat. This is not fair. So when Big Chipmunk is not looking I steal some of his nuts for myself.”
Little Lamb looked at both the chipmunks. He could see the fear each
of them had in his heart. He could see that it was this fear that was making them angry with each other.
Big Chipmunk looked down at Little Chipmunk and said, “If you were always hungry, and I always had enough to eat, why didn’t you ask me for some extra nuts? Surely I would have given you some.
Little Chipmunk looked up at Big Chipmunk and said, I was afraid you would not give me any. You always seemed so angry with me.”
“Yes, I was angry because I thought you were a thief. But now I can see you were just hungry and frightened, frightened you would not have enough to eat and frightened of me.” Both Chipmunks looked at each other with new eyes.
“Truly,” said Little Lamb “Anger only comes from fear. And if you but look and listen to your brother with love the fear and then the anger will disappear.”
“From now on,” said Big Chipmunk, “We will search for nuts together. You can help me find them and I can help you carry them.”
“Then we can share them together,” said Little Chipmunk. And off they ran together, happy to be friends and not enemies.
Little Lamb smiled for he could hear his Father’s Voice in his heart saying, “Your brothers forgave each other for they saw the truth: Anger comes from fear and fear disappears when love is shared.”
Two chipmunks were making a horrible noise in the grassy clearing. Both the chipmunks were chattering in anger. Bits of grass began to fly as the two began to nip and scratch each other. “Brothers,” said Little Lamb, “You both were afraid you would not have enough to eat. You both were selfish and forgot to look at your brother with love. You felt fear and anger and gave that to your brother, and that is what he gave back to you. Now let us try to see only the good and the love in each other...for surely that is what we will get in return.” With that Little Lamb opened his eyes and the mist of the dream cleared. He was back in his Father’s world of love, peace and happiness.
